Phoenix started 40 years ago as a bird of a different feather...

Phoenix Fiberglass didn't just spring up out of no-where. Phoenix Fiberglass founder and owner, Ervin Capps has a long career in the history shotboat building industry. Ervin started at the apprentice level in 1966 while working for Continental Marine (which was eventually sold to Cobalt Marine). After working for Loffland Sail Craft, as a shop foreman and gel-coater, Ervin signed on with Cobalt Marine, where he headed the performance boating division.

In 1969 Ervin started work at Taylor Boats as an assembly foreman, and in 1973 Ervin was promoted to plant supervisor; he was in charge of purchasing, production, scheduling, transportation, and mold construction. After leaving Taylor boats in 1976, Ervin started Condor Custom Boats with his friend and partner Travie Thompson. The Condor Boat company was a major force in the performance boat industry. Condor achieved many awards in product excellence, and was featured several times in both Hot boat and Power Boat magazine. condor flyer

Condor produced boats up until the late eighties. After Condor, Ervin spent the next 15 years as a free-lance marine consultant; performing custom rigging, drive system installations, along with Research and Development work for a major jet drive company.

Ervin also worked as crew chief for Team Condor, a championship drag racing team, which ran boats in the nine, ten, and eleven-second brackets of the SDBA. In 2004 Ervin’s friend and former racer, Dr. Jay Ernst, acquired the original Tom Papp Cheyenne mold. Ervin purchased the mold and began doing business as Phoenix Fiberglass, which has been producing drag boats from the original Cheyenne molds ever since.

The Cheyenne “Head Over Heels” run by Marilyn Brule’ and raced by Ray Florez still holds several records, including the IHBA Division 1 record in both E.T. and MPH for Unblown Gas Jet--weighing in with a 7.9 E.T. and a 129.68 MPH. Ervin is now passing the torch to his apprentice Yahkie Nauman who heads the Phoenix production team which Ervin oversees. The two are hard at work, and now have “Phoenix” Cheyenne’s across the country, including Alaska, Maryland, Chicago, along with the newest baby which will be heading for New Orleans upon completion.
